When we first bought our house, there was a door going from the dining room to kitchen. It was cute and definitely added to the "old house charm" but it didnt really work for us. Older homes are closed off and have lots of doors but we wanted to give our little house a more open feel like you would find in todays more modern residences.
You can see in the photo below a LARGE black arrow pointing to a door with a red circle around it. This would be the area I am discussing now ( just in case you couldn't tell :] )
Anywho, we decided we were going to bust that baby out. We left a half wall so that we wouldn't have to mess with fixing the floor and luckily my electrician brother was on hand to make sure we didn't fry ourselves. My father-in-law is the ULTIMATE demolition man so having him in town for this was excellent as well!
VOILA!
Father-in-law - aint he cute :]
After quite some time of looking like we just cut a big hole in the wall, here is the finished product. We framed the opening out with Hemlock moulding and stained with a clear polyurethane it to match our window and base mouldings. Now we have a nice walk-through that gives the living area a much more open feel. Plus I dont have to feel like i'm in solitary confinement everytime I cook a meal and that is a definite plus. :]
Stay tuned for next weeks dining room reveal! We purchased a new table set and are VERY EXCITED about it!
