Guest Bedroom #1

Continuing down our rather large "to do" list, the guest bedroom on the main floor was a high priority.  We I wanted a cute/comfortable bedroom to have for guests should they come stay with us during our construction.

Before, as you see below, the tenant chose a lovely periwinkle blue color for the top portion of the wall and a mint green for the lower.  He finished it all off with a glamorous Winnie the Pooh border and a groovy brown shag carpet - ick.

We wanted to create a calm space where visitors could enjoy their stay in our home. This is how it went down.
We started with paint and came to our first design challenge of the room.  The ceilings in the two bedrooms on the main floor have coved ceiling which are one of my favorite features of the home but the dilemma we were facing was how to paint the wall and ceiling different colors without having a silly and most likely crooked paint line across the top of the wall.  Solution.  Moulding.  I didnt want to do the moulding halfway up the wall since we already created that look in the bathroom.  I decided to just move the it up, up and up to right before the cove started to curve.  We absolutely love the look and feel that it accentuates the cove even more!

The bedroom furniture is from IKEA and the accessories are a mish mosh of things we had.  I love the way it turned out and how the black accents pop off the cobblestone colored paint.  Another thing I am particularly excited about is the new "art deco" looking vent covers we purchased from Lowes and of course our GORGEOUS hardwood floors :)  LOOOOOVE.

What do you think?  Would you want to stay here?

Inspiration ALERT!!!

Okay so you all know that I am slightly obsessed with Disney..... ;)

I was sitting at my desk yesterday thinking, "Man, I really need my Disneyland fix soon" when an idea popped into my head!

After you enter the park, you have to walk to either the left or the right to pass under the Disneyland Railroad through a mini tunnel.  In these two tunnels you will find the coolest vintage Disney Attraction Posters and I am going to incorporate them into the design of our house!  Here are some of my favorites.

After we get our butts in gear and renovate the upstairs we can move our master bedroom to its rightful place and I can start decorating our office with these great posters.  I actually found a place that you can buy a smaller print which I think will work with the size of the room better!  We dont want it too busy or overbearing.

The thing I love most about the prints is the "old" look of them.  It will fit perfectly in a 1938 home and will serve as a reminder of one of our favorite places without having to paste Mickey Mouse heads and Disney Princesses everywhere.  Along with the prints, I have other "old world" accessories and furniture pieces that I can't wait to incorporate into the space and will fit perfectly with our Disney poster theme.  VERY EXCITE!

What inspires you?

Donde esta el bano?

When we bought out home the bathroom was NASTAY!  Okay, maybe it wasn't THAT bad but the top of the countertop was pretty much at Justin's knees, the toilet HAD to go and the original vanity under the window was really cute but made no sense with the toilet sitting directly in front of it.  It just didnt work for us.

Little brain refresher...  before.

SOOOOO...  we gutted it!  We ripped up the vinyl flooring, mirror, toilet and both vanitites.  I actually was really trying to keep the vanity under the window but it just took up space and was kinda in the way.

We ripped up the hardwood floors, threw down some hardy backer board and laid the same tile we used in the kitchen.  (Mesa - purchased at Lowes)

After the tile was all set and dry, I started thinking of what kind of vanity I would like to incorporate into the space.  The ones I liked at Lowes and Home Depot were nice but SO darn expensive.  I knew I didnt want to drain a bunch of our budget into the vanity so I got creative.

While putsing around in IKEA one weekend, I saw this little dresser.  It was a grey blue color, had curved legs and cute little white ceramic drawer pulls and had an overall vintage look. (EDLAND $199) I paired it with a vessel sink found at Lowes (Decolave $35) and a GREAT vintage looking faucet that was on clearance for $40!!!!

Justin cut a hole in the top and bottomof the dresser and ran all the plumbing through the middle.  Unfortunately the drawers are not usable but they provided just enough space to hide all the plumbing work.

We added some beadboard along to bottom half of the room to hide some badly damaged walls, painted, purchased a new lighting fixture and mirror and now we have a cute vintage bathroom for all our guests to enjoy!
